Epilogue

“I can hardly wait until Rachel gets home,” Jessica eagerly confided to Kate as they sat out on the porch swing in the warmth of late November. Everywhere else in the nation people were experiencing harsh temperatures and even snow, but not here in Arizona. No, on Thanksgiving Day, it was in the sixties and they were enjoying the pale blue sky and sunshine.

Jessica wore a pink angora sweater with a cowl neck, and a soft cream skirt that fell to her ankles. Her hair was caught back behind her head, a beautiful pink-and-white orchid in it. The fuchsia color of the orchid brought out the flushed quality of her cheeks. Dan had given her a gold heart locket shortly after he’d helped rescue her and it hung just above her collarbone as it always did. Inside the locket was a photo of him and her. Together. Like it should always be. He’d also given her a small pair of gold, heart-shaped earrings, which she adored.

Smoothing her fingers over the red velvet skirt she wore with a crisp white blouse, Kate said, “I can’t wait to see Rachel, either. I just wish she could have made it home for Thanksgiving, that’s all.”

“She has to finish up her commitments,” Jessica murmured. “Her teaching contract ends in early December. Just think, she’ll be home soon.” She smiled over at her older sister. Inside, Dan and Sam were finishing up the last of the dishes and cleaning up after the wonderful midday meal. Jessica was so happy to have been able to restart the tradition her mother had begun so many years before—of feeding the homeless of Sedona. A bus from the Sedona mission had just taken twenty homeless people back to town. Yes, Thanksgiving had been very special this year. In so many wonderful, joyous ways.

“December fifteenth, if everything goes according to plan.” Kate sighed. “Rachel said she’d rent a car down in Phoenix and drive north to the ranch. I just hope we don’t get any of those sudden, unexpected snowstorms.”

Jessica nodded. Weather in November, particularly in Oak Creek Canyon, could be unpredictable. “She’s probably used to driving in rain at least, having lived so long over in England.”

“Probably,” Kate agreed. She smiled a little. “I guess I’m just being big sister worrywart, is all.”

Warmth touched Jessica’s heart as she met and held Kate’s gaze. “You love us, that’s why.” She watched as Kate wrestled with her obvious affection. Little by little, her sister had let down her guard, and over the months, Jessica had watched her begin to bloom in a way she’d never seen before. Kate was more vulnerable, more open emotionally, and Jessica relished those wonderful, unexpected gifts from her older sister.

Kate pointed to Jessica’s left finger. “I think it was romantic of Dan to give you his grandmother’s engagement ring this holiday morning. He’s such a great guy.”

Sighing, Jessica rocked in the swing with her sister.

“Isn’t he though? Sometimes,” she murmured, closing her eyes and fingering the gold-and-diamond ring, “I think I’m in this neverending dream.
